Drone survey of dangerous building, as A814 remains closed

Work is set to be carried out on a dangerous building which has closed the main road through Helensburgh – but there is no indication yet of when the route may re-open.

Argyll and Bute Council has confirmed post that it will begin work on Monday to stabilise the dangerous building on the A814.

A drone survey is also planned by the council, which has said East Clyde Street, between its junctions with Sinclair Street and Maitland Street will remain closed until the work is complete.

The council said: “Following a structural engineer’s report, the council will carry out works to stabilise the dangerous building. The work will reduce potential risk of further collapse.

“We have also commissioned a drone survey to provide more detailed information.

We have advised the owners of the intended works and we will pursue recovery of costs along with a commitment to repair the building.

“In the interest of public safety, the road/footpath and immediate area will remain closed until the work is complete.”

The stretch of the road has been closed since October 31, when high winds led to parts of stonework falling from the building.

It has also been closed for lengthy periods in recent years due to concerns over the state of the building, and earlier this year because of damage to the Clock Tower on the opposite side of the road.
