Assurances to parents after children told to self-isolate for 14 days

Health officials have moved to reassure parents after Hermitage Academy pupils in Cove and Kilcreggan were asked to self-isolate.

Argyll and Bute Council said yesterday that three positive cases of Covid-19 had been confirmed at the Helensburgh school.

Cove and Kilcreggan pupils have been asked to self-isolate, but the authority added there was no evidence of transmission of the virus in the school or on the bus taking pupils from the area.

The company which operates the bus service has also reassured parents and said that masks are handed out to every young person using the bus who does not have one.

A spokesperson for Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership said: “In line with national guidance all close contacts of the confirmed cases are being advised to self-isolate for 14 days.

“We are also aware that positive cases can cause some local anxiety in the community.

“Please be reassured that strict control measures are in place at the school and our Health Protection Team are monitoring the situation closely.”

A spokesman for Garelochhead Coaches, which operates the bus to school from the peninsula, said: “Pupils using the school bus from Kilcreggan have been identified as close contacts and have been asked to self isolate as a precaution. There is no evidence of transmission on the bus itself.

“We follow Public Health guidance including cleaning the buses between runs, hand sanitiser is available on all of our vehicles and the mandatory wearing of face masks for all pupils is in force.

“In addition to these measures, we also hand out face masks for any pupil who does not have one.

“We would ask everyone using school transport to continue to follow national advice.”

A council spokesperson previously said: “There is currently no evidence of transmission within the school or the bus itself.

“The school remains open and, unless they have been identified as a close contact, pupils should continue to attend if they remain well.

“Children and staff should not attend school if they develop any of the common symptoms.”
