Essential travel only as ferries cross between tiers

Ferry passengers will be advised not to travel between Gourock and Kilcreggan or Dunoon unless it is essential after new Covid-19 restrictions came into force today.

Inverclyde is in tier three, where the guidance states people should ‘avoid any unnecessary travel out of the area’, whereas Argyll and Bute is in tier two.

Exceptions to this, listed here, include work and education which cannot be done remotely.

Asked about the policy for walkers and cyclists using the Kilcreggan and Dunoon ferries for recreation, a CalMac spokesperson said: ” With regards to travelling under the new restrictions, we will continue to advise travellers to check the latest restrictions and to comply with them.

“We can only advise, not enforce. Passengers are asked to wear face coverings in certain areas of vessels and ports, unless they are exempt.”

Sailings on both routes were suspended this morning because the linkspan at Gourock was due to be lifted out as part of a £1.2m upgrade programme, which has also seen two different temporary timetables introduced for Kilcreggan.

Sailings resumed after 5pm.
