Storm Aidan: A83 and A814 closed amid heavy rainfall

East Clyde Street in Helensburgh has been closed because of a dangerous building

Two main roads are closed as Storm Aidan hits the west coast of Scotland this morning.

The A814 in Helensburgh was closed because of as building which appears on the brink of collapse.

The A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful is already closed because of landslide fears, but now the single track Old Military Road has been blocked by flooding.

The stretch of East Clyde Street in Helensburgh town centre has been closed several times in recent years, and this morning Argyll and Bute Council put diversions in place, saying a building had collapsed.

Traffic is being diverted around Maitland Street, East Princes Street and Sinclair Street.

Meanwhile the main A83 trunk road had been closed as a precaution yesterday, with traffic initially diverted onto the Old Military Road until that too was closed.

Road users travelling on the A83 will be diverted via the Old Military Road at the Rest and be Thankful on Friday and throughout the weekend for safety reasons, with early morning inspections revealing areas of movement on the hillside above the A83.

Contractors BEAR Scotland said 60mm of rain was expected this weekend, while movement had been detected on the slope of Glen Croe.

Traffic Scotland has also warned drivers that large amounts of surface water are affecting the A82 around Tarbet, and Kilcreggan ferry sailings have been cancelled for the rest of today.

Met office yellow warnings for high winds and heavy rain are in place until 7pm tonight.
