The Old Military Road at the Rest and be Thankful has reopened after helicopters were brought in by engineers.

The single-track road was closed yesterday morning after debris and boulders shifted on the hillside, making it unsafe.

Drivers had to use a lengthy diversion via the A82 and A85, and with Saturday seeing the usual high numbers of tourists travelling north and west there were lengthy delays on Loch Lomondside and from Crianlarich to Tyndrum.

But at 6pm today contractors Bear Scotland said the Old Military Road was once again open, with a convoy system in operation after boulders on the hillside in Glen Croe were stabilised.

Helicopters had been used to lowering rock drills which split the boulders, and also dropping water around boulders to allow for their managed descent down to a point of safety.

There is still no indication of when the A83 trunk road itself will reopen, and politicians from all parties have demanded urgent action from the Scottish Government, while calls for a tunnel to be built have also been revived.
