Exhausted and bedraggled cat rescued from busy A83

Update: the car has now been reunited with her owner via the Scottish SPCA.

A third missing cat has been found in Arrochar – this time standing in the middle of the busy A83 trunk road.

In recent weeks two cats which had gone missing from Dennistoun Crescent in Helensburgh as part of a series of disappearances which the Scottish SPCA says is ‘very concerning’.

Others have been found in Balmaha and near Glen Fruin.

Earlier today Melanie Tonks was driving on the A83 near the old tollhouse, between Tarbet and Arrochar, when she saw cars slowing down to avoid the cat.

“I saw this wee cat in the middle of the road, so I parked my car, lifted it over, wrapped a scarf found it and took it home,” she said.

“It was absolutely bedraggled, it was soaking, the poor thing.

“It was skin and bones – it had been on the run for I don’t know how long, at first I thought it was feral.”

Melanie contacted the Scottish SPCA, who sent a staff member from Glasgow to collect the cat and take it for veterinary care.

Anyone who recognises the cat is asked to contact the Scottish SPCA.

Sadly this cat is not Nevis, the only one of five cats to have disappeared from Dennistoun Crescent which has not yet been reunited with their owners.

Nevis is chipped and has been missing for three weeks with no sightings – he is much missed by owners Fiona and Joe Palmer, and their children Matthew, 15, and Liam, 18, as well as Marley their dog.

Anyone with information about Nevis is asked to call 07824833504 or 07703801730.

It is not known whether the Dennistoun Crescent cats had been taken somewhere and kept together for a while, or whether they were dumped at various locations on different days.

The Scottish SPCA says the disappearances are ‘very concerning’, with chief superintendent Mike Flynn adding: “Due to the unlikelihood this is a coincidence, we have reason to believe that someone is deliberately transporting cats for malicious reasons.

“We would ask those in Helensburgh and the surrounding areas to be vigilant.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the charity’s confidential helpline – 03000 999 999.

In the Dennistoun Crescent area neighbourhood catwatch group has been set up after four cats were reunited with their owners:

  • Patch was taken in and cared for by a kind-hearted family in the Arrochar area, who contacted his family after seeing news of the disappearances.
  • Jax had to fend for himself for about six weeks in the Arrochar area and was in a poor condition when he was reunited with owners Diane and Nigel on July 22 via the Scottish SPCA’s animal rehoming centre at Milton near Dumbarton.
  • Nero was found in Balmaha on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond, 20 miles from Helensburgh, and he made it home to Sara and Colin Rettie on August 7, more than a month after going missing.
  • Flash was found last week near the Cross Keys roundabout.
