Timeframe for Morrisons to open in Helensburgh still not clear

Over 100 workers were affected by the closure

There is still no date for Morrisons to take over the empty former Waitrose site in Helensburgh.

But local MSP Jackie Baillie says she will continue pushing for a clear timeframe from the supermarket chain.

Waitrose closed the Helensburgh store in early May, after refusing to delay the closure because of the Covid-19 crisis, as had happened with stores scheduled for closure in England.

Morrisons, which already has a store in nearby Dumbarton, confirmed in March that it had bought the lease for the site, including the petrol station, but has still not confirmed plans for opening.

Today Ms Baillie said: “Morrisons advise me that Waitrose have completed their store strip-out and assigned over their lease.

“Morrisons’ contractors will shortly undertake a comprehensive survey of the site as soon as practically possible which will then show the level of work required and the time frame for completion.

“I have been pushing for a definitive time frame and will continue to do so.

“Morrison’s Dumbarton was recently added to their store pick service, meaning that online deliveries will be serviced from the store.

“This has helped to increase their online capacity in the area so that they can offer more delivery slots in Helensburgh and the surrounding areas.”
