A litter-picking station set up on the beach in Kilcreggan has attracted interest from as afield as Australia.
Emma Rolling put pickers, a bin and bags on the beach near home at the weekend, with a sign asking people to ‘be a picker, not a tosser’.
She posted a photo on Twitter and within 24 hours her post had received more than 80 likes, as well as a comment from Dr Lilliana Corredor, a university lecturer in Australia.
Set this litter picking station up
Hope people respect it and the empty bags don’t blow away everywhere – please put stone back on top!
Will removed tied up bags at end of day – just leave at side! #keepourbeachesclean #kilcreggan @LochsidePress pic.twitter.com/0cC0QytahU— Emma (@camilsam) July 19, 2020
Emma said she walks her dogs on the beach in Kilcreggan every day and often notices plastic and other rubbish which could be a danger to marine life.
While on holiday in Cornwall she noticed some beaches had a similar facility at some beaches as part of an official #2minutebeachclean campaign.
“I kept raving about what a good idea it was – making people more aware and it was something that children that came saw as fun, and good to instil at a young age,” she said.
“The litter on that stretch in Kilcreggan at the moment isn’t bad – as a result of lockdown maybe and not as many people being out and about – but after some heavy weather the beach can be washed up with all sorts that comes from across the bigger towns such as Gourock and Greenock.
“I’m amazed by the response – I only did it to make people aware locally and to make sure it was OK to place it.
“The response from Australia just goes to show the global reach of like-minded individuals across the globe to look after our planet in whatever small way we can.”
Well done to Emma! A good deed & something useful for the village. Community Council should take note.
