Cove’s library to reopen, as real ale festival is cancelled

Cove Community Library is due to reopen tomorrow, after being closed since the coronavirus lockdown started in March.

Organisers reluctantly decided last week to cancel the annual Cove and Kilcreggan Real Ale Festival, feeling that September would be too soon for that type of public gathering to be held safely.

But the directors of Cove Burgh Hall say that bookings from community groups for their autumn activities are now encouraged, although this still has to be on a provisional basis.

Chair of directors Alison Morrison said the building team was currently carrying out a risk assessment, drawing on government guidelines and insurers’ stipulations, and policies were being updated.

“In turn, it will be the responsibility of user groups to implement and document their own risk assessment procedures,” she added.

“All this is essential for community safety and wellbeing.

“We welcome the opportunity to put measures in place, with a view to bringing the hall and all its valuable activities to life as soon as sensible – switching the lights back on.”

Both the burgh hall and the library are run by the community, after being threatened with closure by Argyll and Bute Council.

Libraries elsewhere in Argyll and Bute were transferred in 2017 to Live Argyll, a trust created by the council and which also runs leisure centres, swimming pools and the Victoria Halls in Helensburgh.

An announcement on that organisation’s website still states: “In accordance with government advice LiveArgyll has taken the difficult decision to close all facilities, suspend all programmes and cancel events across LiveArgyll until further notice.”

Cove Community Library’s opening hours are: Mondays 2-5pm; Wednesdays 10am-4pm; Fridays and Saturdays 10am-1pm.
