More changes for wheelie bin collections

Argyll and Bute Council is reverting to its usual schedule for household bin collections – although there is no date yet for food waste.

Kerbside collections were cut back in March because of lockdown measures during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Initial advice was that recycling should be stored at home, but the council relented and switched to both the green general waste and blue recycling bins being collected fortnightly, with everything being sent to landfill.

Kerbside glass recycling will not resume in Helensburgh and Lomond until July 6.

An announcement today added: “Food recycling collecting in Helensburgh and Lomond will resume at a future date when resources allow as we still have staff absences relating to Covid-19.

Robin Currie, policy lead for housing, roads and infrastructure Services, said: “Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for their patience.

“We had to make quick changes to the service as we managed our first responses to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is good to start taking some small steps back to normal life. Taking a phased approached to reinstating bin collections and recycling will help things runs smoothly as we continue to operate under national guidelines and social distancing.

“To everyone who managed to hold on to their recycling, or used public collection points to dispose of it, I want to offer special thanks.

“From the comments we have received over the past few weeks it is clear that many residents are as keen as we are to keep as much waste as possible out of landfill.”

The council says that if you have used your blue bin for general waste at any time over the past few weeks, you should wash it out before starting to use it again purely for recycling materials.

To check your schedule go to the council’s website: https://www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/planning-and-environment/bin-collection from June 19 or call 01546 605514. The schedule will be the same as that in place before March.

  1. The have done it again! I read here today that my recycling bin will be emptied this Friday but my general waste bin is full and will not be emptied until Friday 3rd July. The same thing happened at the initial closure; it was announced the day before my recycling was due for collection. At that time I went through the recycling stuff, burnt the paper and card and compacted the plastic to go into the landfill bin.

Everything has to start somewhere and we need to work around whatever arrangements ABC put in place. It would have been sensible to give us t least one or maybe two week’s notice so that we can get back into the routine in a sensible way. I’ll maybe put out both bins this Friday in the forlorn hope that somebody comes to collect the landfill stuff. I do not intend to go through my general waste bin to extract any recyclable materials and may have to make a trip to the coup with anything for landfill that arises over the next fortnight.
