Lochside car parks closed by Argyll and Bute

The car park in Luss was full on March 21, shortly before the lockdown was imposed

Car parks in beauty spots beside Loch Lomond and Loch Long have been closed by Argyll and Bute Council in a bid to make visitors stay at home.

Both Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority and Stirling Council closed car parks last month in response to travel restrictions imposed during the coronavirus pandemic.

But Argyll and Bute kept its car parks open, saying that closing them ‘would use up staff resources that we need to focus on delivering other vital services within our communities’.

There was a U-turn today however, with car parks at Luss, Arrochar and Duck Bay being closed.

A council spokesperson said: “Our message for visitors is ‘please stay away so we can welcome you back soon’.

“National guidance is clear – only travel if it’s essential. We all have a duty to act responsibly and keep each other safe from the threat of COVID-19.

“We want to welcome visitors back to Argyll and Bute, but once it is safe to travel.

“Essential workers, who still have to travel, will be able to access the electric vehicle charging point at Arrochar.”

Bus operator Garelochhead Coaches because there is no safe alternative turning point for its 305 service there will be a one-way loop.

The bus will continue along the A82 and enter Luss via the north entrance, then sitting on the Old Road by Luss Village shop until time to depart.

Passengers for Oakbank and Aldochlay can stay on the bus and be dropped off on the way to Alexandria.

“We would like to reassure residents of Luss, once the car park opens again we will revert the route back to normal,” said a statement.

The 302 service will use the normal route but the car park will not be served.
