I’ll campaign to save Helensburgh’s Waitrose, says MSP

The Helensburgh store was run by staff from other branches while local workers were told the news on Loch Lomondside.

A campaign could be launched to keep Waitrose in Helensburgh.

Earlier today it was revealed here that shocked staff had been told the supermarket was due to close in early May, with over 100 jobs at risk.

But already an MSP has moved to try and reverse the decision, offering to front a campaign to keep it open.

Maurice Corry: ‘Shocked and saddened’.

Maurice Corry, who lives in Helensburgh, said he had played a role in bringing the upmarket chain to the town seven years ago.

“I am shocked and saddened to learn that Waitrose may be moving out of Helensburgh,” the Conservative list MSP for the West of Scotland said this afternoon.

“The store, along with the petrol station and click & collect services for John Lewis have been a great addition to the town.

“I, along with many others, campaigned to attract Waitrose to the town and I for one will front a campaign to save our store.

“People are attracted to Helensburgh from other areas, in large because there is a Waitrose.

“I would urge anyone who wants to help save this store to contact my office.

“It is vital we retain these services and ensure the hardworking and dedicated staff are protected.”

All staff at the supermarket were summoned to a meeting at the Lodge on Loch Lomond this morning, where they heard the news.

Some may be transferred to other stores, but many face redundancy.

Mr Corry’s office can be contacted at Maurice.Corry.msp@parliament.scot, or called on  0141 942 4942 or 0131 348 6155.
