Surface dressing and road repairs planned in Argyll and Bute

The parking area at Whistlefield is one of three that have been closed for most of last summer while materials for surface dressing were stored there.

Surface dressing on the A817 Haul Road through Glen Fruin and resurfacing of the Carman Road are the main projects planned in roads maintenance across the Helensburgh area in the coming year.

Argyll and Bute Council is proposing work on 14 stretches of road, costing a total of £686,000, in the financial year which starts on April 1.

The council will spend a total of £4.9m, but as in previous years, Helensburgh and Lomond is expected to receive the smallest allocation of the authority’s four geographical areas, with ‘historic percentage splits’ based on the length of road rather than population.

The proposed work is set out in a report to Thursday’s meeting of the council’s environment, development and infrastructure committee  which says the current plans are draft and further bids may be made to the Strategic Timber Transport Scheme.

A total of £2m will be spent on surface dressing, states a report by interim executive director with responsibility for roads and infrastructure Kirsty Flanagan.

“As in previous years, the roads reconstruction programme will be delivered by a mixed economy model, with the councils in-house team delivering carriageway reconstruction and patching works,” it adds.

“The surface dressing element of the programme will be delivered by an external contractor. In order to ensure that the programme provides maximum benefit to the overall network, there will be a minimum of £2m of surface dressing work carried out.

“This enables the maximum surface area to be covered which will help to seal carriageway cracks, prevent the ingress of water and reduce the amount of reactive maintenance for potholes.”

The full schedule for the Helensburgh and Lomond area is:

  • C74 Carman Road: £190,000 drainage and overlay
