Blown away: Kilcreggan bus stops fail to pass the weather test

The sign is hanging off this bus stop on Shore Road in Kilcreggan

Controversial bus stops which were installed across the Rosneath Peninsula in the last few weeks have already started to fall apart.

Signs have fallen off at three stops, including this one in Cove

Contractors working for Argyll and Bute Council placed the new signs on verges and pavements in December and January as part of a £100,000 project funded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).

But residents were furious about some of the locations for new signs, while the Cove and Kilcreggan Trust said they had not been consulted about the ones built on their land.

And last month Cove and Kilcreggan community councillors said the new stops were potentially putting disabled people at risk.

Now the signs on three of the new bus stops have fallen off in recent high winds, while another is dangling at a rakish angle.

One of the signs which have fallen off is outside Cove Burgh Hall, where a functional bus stop was replaced by the new shelter and sign.

Last month Argyll and Bute Council issued a statement saying the new bus stops were making ‘a big difference’, would take less maintenance and were ‘future-proofed’.

Today an Argyll and Bute spokesperson said: “The bus stop signs will be checked and damage assessed.

“Repairs will be conducted at no cost to the council.”

  1. Dear Sirs,

After over a year of this report going into your paper, I feel the need to write to you to set the record straight, I was the supplier of the flags and poles, however, SPT used an external installation company to fit the components, it has been proved beyond doubt that the faults were due to incorrect fitting by the installation contractor and NOT the supplier, reports have been sent to SPT and their engineers and the installation company have had to go back to refit, however, they have dragged their heels and have been fitting temporary components of their own which are not as per original tender, if you wish to contact me, please feel free, I have additional photo’s that back up my statement, as I have had no apology from anyone and I was not asked by Lochside to respond to the claims in the first place, i felt it time to set the record straight.
