MSP says he will campaign to secure the future of outdoor centre

An MSP says he will campaign to ‘find a future’ for Blairvadach outdoor centre after its closure was announced yesterday.

The cost-cutting move by Glasgow City Council will see the equivalent of 16 full-time jobs lost at the residential centre in Shandon, which has taught skills such as sailing and climbing for over 40 years.

Maurice Corry: ‘Blairvadach provided great opportunities’

Today Conservative MSP for the West of Scotland region Maurice Corry blamed the SNP government for ‘appalling’ cuts being made by local councils.

He added: “This is a time when we should be encouraging our young to get out of the house, off social media and games consoles, and out in nature experiencing and working with other people.

“Blairvadach has provided great opportunities to inner city children, along with children from the local area.

“I will be campaigning to find a future for Blairvadach, to maintain these opportunities to our young and support the local jobs that it provides.”

Meanwhile Cllr George Freeman, who said he heard news of the closure ‘with great disappointment’, is seeking confirmation from officials and other Argyll and Bute councillors that none of them had been made aware of the closure threat in advance.
