Helensburgh Clock Tower repairs to start today after Storm Ciara damage

The road has been closed since Sunday, with traffic diverted along Princes Street.

Helensburgh’s Clock Tower could be repaired later today, meaning the A814 road through the town can be opened again.

A stretch of East Clyde Street in the town centre was closed on Sunday when the tower, part of a former church, was damaged in Storm Ciara.

This was the fourth time in recent years that this section of road has been closed because of damage to privately-owned buildings.

But this morning Argyll and Bute Council leader Aileen Morton, whose Helensburgh Central ward includes the building, said urgent repairs would be carried out.

Repairs were delayed until the storm had abated

“I appreciate how frustrating it is for local residents for this kind of diversion to be back in place on Clyde Street,” she said.

“Following discussion with the building owners, the council has instructed repairs to be undertaken later today and hope to have the road reopened this afternoon if all goes well.

“The costs incurred for the repair will then be billed to the owners, as this kind of work is always the responsibility of building owners.”

According to Scotland’s Land Information Service, the Clock Tower was bought in November 2017 by The Tower Digital Arts Centre for £55,000 – previously it had housed the town’s tourist information centre.

The owners have been contacted for comment.
