Red warning beacons approved for firing range

A string of warning beacons on the edge of a Ministry of Defence firing range near Garelochhead have been given planning permission

The red beacons will be on hills classed as ‘very sensitive countryside’ near the A817 Haul Road through Glen Fruin.

Flashing red beacons are planned

Four separate planning applications were submitted to Argyll and Bute Council by the Ministry of Defence for five-metre high beacons beside the long-established firing range.

And after there were no public objections, this week planning officials approved the applications under delegated powers.

Handling reports say the work will make the firing range compliant with current MoD regulations and there were ‘no adverse material considerations’.

They add: “The proposed installation of a red warning beacon is consistent with the Local Development Plan policy and supplementary guidance in that it is an addition to an established use within the very sensitive countryside.

The beacons will be built on foundations built from concrete taken to the sites by all-terrain vehicles.
