Red warning lights planned for hills beside Ministry of Defence site

A string of warning beacons is being planned for the edge of a Ministry of Defence firing range near Garelochhead.

The red beacons would be on hills near the A817 Haul Road through Glen Fruin, an area popular with hillwalkers.

Flashing red beacons are planned

Four separate planning applications have been submitted to Argyll and Bute Council by the Ministry of Defence for five-metre high beacons beside the long-established firing range.

The application forms state that public rights of way are on the land affected: “The installation of five-metre high red warning beacons along the Strone Hill range in the MoD boundary in order to warn the public of potential firing in the firing range below.

“The MoD are installing posts that have a red warning beacons on the top.

“The posts are to warn the public when firing is in progress on the adjacent firing range. This is part of ongoing works to upgrade the range.”

Initial feedback from council planners said permission would not be needed if the beacons were less than four metres high, but the MoD’s planning agents said they could not deviate from the five-metre height.

The beacons will be on foundations built from concrete taken to the sites by all-terrain vehicles.

Full details are on the council’s website – the reference numbers for the planning applications are 19/02451/PP, 19/02453/PP, 19/02452/PP and 19/02277/PP.
