Suspension of parliament ‘outrageous’, says Brendan O’Hara

The suspension of the House of Commons has been attacked as ‘outrageous and profoundly undemocratic’ by Argyll and Bute’s MP.

In the small hours of Tuesday morning, in one of the final contributions before the House was prorogued for five weeks, Brendan O’Hara used the parliamentary mechanism of a Point of Order to unreservedly condemn the UK government’s decision to suspend parliament.

Citing what the former Work and Pension Secretary, Amber Rudd said when she quit the Conservative whip at the weekend, Mr O’Hara accused Boris Johnson and his government of having little or no interest in negotiating a deal with the European Union.

He said that the government seemed ‘hell-bent on pursuing a catastrophic policy of a No-Deal Brexit’.

Seeking the advice of the outgoing Speaker John Bercow, Mr O’Hara asked how he might register his anger and deep frustration’ at being forced out of parliament, just seven weeks before the UK is due to leave the European Union .

He added: “The very least the people of Argyll an Bute should expect is that their elected Member of Parliament be able to represent them, here in this chamber at such a critical time.”

  1. undemocratic” is this man for real? The majority of people in Scotland voted to remain part of the UK but his party ignored the result. Now shall we go back to the word “undemocratic” it doesn’t matter what solutions we’re put forward to him or the other SNP members they would not agree with anyone or anything. The only thing that they care about is themselves and an independent Scotland. The UK voted to leave and that is what should happen. It was a UK vote not a Scottish vote I just wish these people would take note exactly the same as “once in a lifetime” if they don’t get the results they want they just scream and scream and scream.
