Conic Hill safety warning after seventh rescue this year

An injured walker was rescued by helicopter from Conic Hill on Tuesday – the seventh callout of the year for rescuers at that location.

The landmark near Loch Lomond is a popular attraction and also features on the West Highland Way.

But after a series of incidents Lomond Mountain Rescue Team has appealed for walkers to take extra care and make sure they are wearing suitable footwear.

A spokesperson said: “The path Is quite eroded with short grass not giving much purchase for boots, so it’s fairly slippery even when dry.

“This particular location is after you have descended from the summit to the ‘other side’ of the hill on the broad path to where the top of the stony steps take you down to the bealach before the wooden stairs.”

In the latest incident Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park rangers at Balmaha visitor centre contacted the police at 11.48am to say there was an injured female with a suspected broken leg on the hill.

They did not have an exact position but had sent staff up the hill to try and assist.

The casualty was a 28 year-old Belgian who was walking the West Highland Way with her friend, but had slipped and fallen around 400m above the bealach with a possible fracture to her left ankle.

Scotland’s charity air ambulance Helimed 76 landed on the hill and six mountain rescue team staff packaged the injured woman, with the assistance of Helimed 76 crew, and she was flown to hospital.
