Holyrood hears call for steamer Waverley support

The Scottish Government has been urged to help get the Waverley sailing again.

The iconic paddle steamer will not sail at all this year, after the devastating news that it needs a new boiler – with an estimated cost of £2m.

And yesterday Dumbarton constituency MSP Jackie Baillie raised a question with the Scottish Government asking whether it would provide support to help with the repairs and if it would meet with representatives of the Waverley to discuss the issue further.

Ms Baillie said afterwards: “The Waverley is steeped in history and has a special place in the hearts of residents along the Clyde and across Scotland. It provides a unique and memorable experience for all visitors to the area.

“I was saddened at the announcement cancelling all excursions for 2019. It is clear that the cost of replacing the boilers will be significant and help will be required.

“I am delighted that the Scottish Government has agreed to meet with myself and with representatives from the Waverley to discuss how best to address the issues and any potential support that the Scottish Government can provide in order to get the Waverley sailing again for 2020.

In response to the parliamentary question, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop said the issue was a serious concern.

“I am more than happy to arrange appropriate meetings,” she added.

“However, we perhaps have to identify the appropriate bodies that could support the Waverley in any application. As I said, no contact has been made to date.

“As someone who celebrated her 21st birthday sailing on the Clyde from Ayr to Largs, I certainly have a great fondness for the Waverley, as does the rest of Scotland.

“Everyone wishes the save the Waverley campaign well. If the public get behind the campaign and donate, I am sure that we will see the Waverley sailing again.”
