ACT Argyll clean up Kilcreggan after the storms

Stones and debris from winter storms in Kilcreggan have been tackled by a team from ACT Argyll.

Cove and Kilcreggan Trust asked Argyll and the Isles Coast and Countryside Trust for help with the verge above the sea wall on Silver Bay.

The team moved the natural debris back over the sea wall and collected rubbish, disposing of dangerous waste safely. This cleared the grass, allowing for it to be cut again.

The main charitable goal of  the trust is to provide support for the aged, infirm and needy residents of Cove and Kilcreggan, but it also contributes to the maintenance of the local area.

Cove and Kilcreggan Trust said that ACT Argyll’s help in dealing with the rubbish in Silver Bay was very welcome.

Board member Danny Kelly said: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate ACT Argyll on the excellent work carried out at Silver Bay Kilcreggan in removing all the rubbish etc that was washed up on to the grassed area, it has been very much appreciated by local residents.”

After completing the three-day task, Mike Cavin, ACT Argyll trainee, said: “It was great to see how much the local community appreciates our efforts.”

The Kilcreggan clean-up follows work in Rosneath in December, when they cleared  undergrowth around Clachan Glen.

ACT Argyll’s project co-ordinator Mark McDougall added: “The team worked hard here to make a huge visual improvement. It’s a shame that, as with other areas around the coast, there were so many plastics washed up – predominately blue and white drinking straws, but also a number of sanitary products and used needles or syringes.

“But we got there in the end and the grass is clear again – a satisfying result, and a big thank you to Danny and Harry of Cove and Kilcreggan Trust for getting us involved.”

ACT Argyll is an environmental works project which aims to improve the natural and social environment by giving jobseekers certified skills and experience to help them move into full-time work.
