Public poll over short term parking in Kilcreggan

An online poll has been created to ask whether there should be short term parking spaces in Kilcreggan.

The centre of the village has been plagued by parking problems in recent years, especially when the Waverley paddle steamer calls at the pier.

The issue could get even worse if the Waverley does not call at Helensburgh this year because the town’s pier is closed for safety reasons – the steamer’s provisional timetable shows two calls at Kilcreggan over the bank holiday weekend at the end of May, but none at Helensburgh.

Last year Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council heard that some Waverley passengers who had booked tickets then missed the sailing because they could not park, and there are fears that passengers will drive to Kilcreggan if Helensburgh sailings are unavailable.

Businesses have complained of losing trade because customers cannot park, and ferry passengers have been held partly to blame.

The community council is considering signs to mark a small number of car park spaces as short term, and has launched a Facebook poll to ask people’s views – so far 160 people have voted, with 88% in favour.

The community council is also planning a clean-up in Kilcreggan village, on Saturday April 13 from 10am.

A spokesperson invited the public to join in: “We intend to meet at Kilcreggan pier and get a few hours under our belts to make this community area cleaner.

“Families are welcome to join, the more people the more we get done and the better the area will be for folk living here and coming to visit.”

  1. I haven’t seen the wee bus that the base workers used for a while; are they using cars now? How about approaching the MoD/Babcock? Without these workers we’d lose our ferry, so let’s not just play the blame game.
Re the Waverley , could they lay on a bus from Helensburgh?

  2. How about converting the old boatyard on Fort Road in to a pay & display car park? Nice little earner to be had there. Would look OK with a bit of landscaping round the edges.
