Persimmon bids for more houses on Helensburgh site

The company says the development with more houses would be attractive.

Developers want to increase the number of houses on a controversial Helensburgh site by almost 10%.

Persimmon Homes were given permission to build 76 houses on the former Dobbies garden centre site in Helensburgh in 2017, despite more than 80 objections.

Now the company has asked Argyll and Bute Council for planning permission to increase the total number of houses to 83.

The town’s community council raised concerns about the increase when consulted, but the company says the development would be attractive and is an efficient use of land and the change will mean 25% of the houses on the site are affordable.

In a design and access statement, Persimmon say: “The final layout represents a logical and legible remix of the northern section of the site which responds to the sites topography and setting.

“The design and landscape principles applied to the consented development have been applied to the re-mix and the building line has been staggered in response to pre-application feedback and build-outs incorporated into the road.

“The proposed development increases the number of homes across the wider site to 83 modest two-four bedroom family homes overall.

“The housing mix offers a range of house types which provides greater diversity within the development and results in a well designed street scene.

“The proposed development is considered to maintain the landscaped feel of the surrounding area and complies with the council’s open space requirements.”

The full plans are available on the council’s website – the reference number is 19/00031/PP
