Storm Diana batters Helensburgh and Rosneath Peninsula

Weather warnings will remain in force until the early hours of tomorrow as Storm Diana battered the Helensburgh and Lomond area.

Ferry services across the Clyde were cancelled, although trains to Helensburgh Central and on the West Highland Line were running for most of the day there were problems with the signalling system at Craigendoran from 5pm onwards.

Police have urged drivers to take care with the risk of floods and fallen trees, while one passenger reported seaweed blowing into a 316 service bus as it went through Clynder.

At high tide in mid-afternoon waves were washing across the B833 Shore Road in Kilcreggan, and Police Scotland have warned of flooding in the Dunoon area.

The pier car park in Helensburgh was severely flooded.

A Met Office spokesperson said the weather was ‘very unsettled’ with gusts of up to 60 mph are expected, with 70 mph gusts on higher ground.

“Winds will also turn west to southwesterly across Northern Ireland and western Scotland later, transferring the main focus for strong winds here, then finally to northern Scotland through the evening,” they added.

“The strong winds will also bring some rough seas and large waves, with some coastal impacts possible. Winds will moderate across the south of the warning area by evening and then across remaining parts overnight.”
