Job cuts announced at Silvers boatyard

Redundancies have been announced at Rosneath boatyard Silvers Marine, one of the best-known names in Scottish sailing.

Staff were called to a meeting on Tuesday of last week and handed letters saying their employment would end later this month.

It is understood that up to 19 jobs are affected – the yard will remain trading for boat storage, but will no longer employ maintenance and repair staff.

Several of the workers are highly skilled and have worked at the yard for many years.

The company, based at the Silverhills boatyard, was taken over by GSS (Plant) Ltd in 2014, with all Silvers staff being re-employed by the new owners.

Previously, in November 2008, the yard and assets were sold to a new company, Silvers Marine (UK) Ltd, headed by Mark Aikman in a deal which also saw the workforce retained.

Last year a planning application by Silvers Marine was approved which would have seen a berm with infill being built to increase boat storage, with a new pier for work boat access.

Silvers have not responded to requests for comment.
