Clyde Street in Helensburgh to stay closed until next month

Storm Ali and further problems with a dangerous building have forced the main road through Helensburgh to remain closed even longer than expected.
The A814 at East Clyde Street has been closed for more than three months because of a dangerous building, forcing drivers to detour along King Street or Princes Street.
It was due to reopen yesterday but Argyll and Bute Council says that further damage was caused in Wednesday’s high winds.
Council leader Aileen Morton said: “A small part of this is down to the storm earlier this week preventing completion of the agreed programme, however the bulk of the delay is due to further work now identified as needing done to ensure safety.
“Work will start on Tuesday to provide support to the front façade of the building and it is expected that the road and footpaths will reopen on Friday October 5.”

  1. We are now at the stage that we need demolition along Clyde St rather than continual road closures and repairs. This is not the only part of the town that is falling down; the Post Office sorting office has props holding up part of the façade and so has part of the old town hall on Sinclair St.

These building are now100 years old or more and need either major and expensive refurbishment or demolition.
