New call for CPR training in all schools

MSP Jackie Baillie says she is to work with British Heart Foundation Scotland on plans to introduce CPR training in secondary schools in her constituency.

The Dumbarton constituency MSP will work with the charity in its bid to improve cardiac arrest survival rates by supporting the roll-out of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in Scottish schools.

But Argyll and Bute Council says most schools in the Helensburgh area already have Heart Start training in place.

Ms Baillie said: “The research that BHF has carried out on the survival rate of those who suffer out of hospital cardiac arrests after having CPR performed on them proves how vital a skill it is to have.

“Our young people should be fully equipped and able to perform CPR if a situation was to arise.

“This training will only have a positive impact on the community and I look forward to working with BHF Scotland as we roll it out within our schools.”

And Daniel Jones, policy and public affairs officer for BHF Scotland, said: “We are encouraging Local Authorities across Scotland to commit to introducing CPR for all secondary pupils.

“BHF Scotland have committed to providing all Scottish Local Authority schools with a free Call, Push, Rescue training kit, which allows a class of 30 pupils to be taught CPR in only 30 minutes.”

A spokesperson for the council said: “The majority of our schools in Helensburgh and Lomond already deliver Heart Start training in partnership with the local Rotary Club.

“We are looking at ways to introduce this to the curriculum in all secondary schools across Argyll and Bute.”
