Second chance after shortage of community council candidates

Nominations were opened today in by-elections for community councils around Helensburgh.

Nominations for community councils across Argyll and Bute were held in March, and in most areas there were fewer candidates than seats – actual elections were only needed in two areas, Jura and Kilninver & Kilmelford.

But in 12 areas there weren’t enough nominations to make the community council quorate, or procedurally viable.

These include Cove and Kilcreggan, where there are 11 vacancies, Rosneath and Clynder (10) and Cardross (also 10).

There were fears even before nominations opened that there would not be enough candidates in Cove and Kilcreggan, although it is understood that new volunteers have been found following a social media appeal.

The closing date for nominations is on Thursday May 24 at 4pm; if there still aren’t enough volunteers at the stage the next step is unclear, although a single community council to cover the villages of Cove, Kilcreggan, Clynder and Rosneath has been tentatively suggested.

Nomination forms are available on the council’s website here.
