Cost rules out community speed cameras in Cove and Kilcreggan

New figures reveal number of drivers caught by police on local roads

The possibility of community-funded speed cameras on the Rosneath was discussed last week, as new figures showed steep variations in the number of people stopped by police.

No-one at all was caught speeding on public roads on the peninsula in 2016, a Freedom of Information request to Police Scotland has revealed.

In 2015 a total of 11 drivers were stopped on the B833, which runs along the shore from Garelochhead to Coulport, but in 2014 the figure was much lower again – just a single person.

Last week Cove and KIlcreggan Community Council heard that a company had been in touch, advertising speed cameras which flash and reveal the speed of anyone over the limit.

But the cost – £1,399 for a mains-powered camera and £1,799 for a solar-powered version – was seen as a major obstacle.

“There are a small number of people who drive recklessly around the peninsula,” said community council chairman Nick Davies.

“Speeding is a local problem and we have had accidents in the area.

“I have no idea where the funding would come from, and raising the money would be the problem.”

The Freedom of Information request showed that between 2014 and 2026 no drivers had been caught speeding on the B872 in Garelochhead.

An average of just over five drivers a year were stopped for speeding on the A818 Sinclair Street and Black Hill rod in Helensburgh.

The highest total of all roads in the Helensburgh and Lomond area every year was the A814, which runs from Cardross, through Helensburgh and Rhu and then on to Arrochar.

An average of nearly 43 speeding drivers a year were stopped by police on the A82 beside Loch Lomond, but again the figures for this road show steep variations.
