Antiques, sailing and architecture in literary society’s new programme

Kilcreggan’s TV-presenting antiques expert Arusha Irvine is part of an eclectic range of speakers who will help Cove and Kilcreggan Literary Society.

Other talks will range from artists to maritime history as the society marks its 70th anniversary.

Meetings are held in Cove Burgh Hall starting at 8pm, with the exception of the Christmas event on December 4.

The programme will start tomorrow (Monday October 2), with Rev Ann Cameron and Alistair Cameron discussing the Changing Face of Qatar.

The following week there will not be a meeting because of Cove Carnival events, then on October 16 musician Stephen Adams will help celebrate the society’s 70th anniversary.

Derek Hall will speak about the poet McGonagall on October 23, and on October Ailsa Turner will return, discussing John Everett Millais.

Cove author and naval architect Ian Nicolson will discuss ‘The Heroes who built the Glen Lee’ on November 6.

‘For Love of the Rhodendron’ is Carol Rowe’s topic on November 13., then the following week Nick and Rachel Walker will talk about the history of the puffer VIC32.

On November 27 James Crawford’s topic will be ‘I went to Tristan, then on December 4 there will be a Christmas party and musical entertainment, starting at 7.30pm.

The new year will start on January 8 with a look into sailing history, journalist Iain McAllister discussing William Fife and America’s Cup.

Steve Hearns will discuss mountain rescue on January 15, then Alan Richardson’s theme on January 22 is Singlish, Chinglish, Vinglish – Teaching English in Asia.

Arusha Irvine, who is now one of the presenters of the BBC television programme Antiques Road Trip, will discuss The Wonder of Antiques on January 29.

February’s first speaker is Seonaid Baker with A Tourist’s view of Japan, then on the 12th David Harvie will discuss The Man who caused the Boer War.

Architect Bruce Jamieson will discuss his Helensburgh project The Mackintosh Club Rooms on February 19,

Cars that I have owned (and the ones that got away) will be David Morgan’s theme on February 26

The final speaker on March 5 will be Dr Gordon McNaughton, discussing the history of accident and emergency, before the AGM and quiz on March 12.
