News in brief: Firefighters in action, grants for community groups, help to make homes energy-efficient

Firefighters from Cove were called out to douse a garden bonfire in Kilcreggan last night.

The fire, between School Road and Argyll Road, was brought under control within 20 minutes by the Scottish Fir and Rescue team.

Community groups in Argyll and Bute are being reminded to bid for a share of a £50,000 fund aimed at helping people to spruce and brighten up their areas.

Argyll and Bute Council says there is up to £5,000 available to local groups and applications should be made by July 30.

Projects eligible for grants will be those that will deliver long-term benefits to the environment and amenity of local communities.

Some of the ideas that will be considered for funding include:

  • Creating community gardens
  • Community beach clean-ups
  • Ideas for improved recycling
  • Litter pick-up days
  • Giving community facilities a makeover.

Successful awards will be announced in September.
