Brendan O’Hara hangs on to Argyll and Bute

Brendan O’Hara

Brendan O’Hara retained his Argyll and Bute seat in this week’s General Election – but with a dramatically reduced majority.

On a night of dramatic surprise results across the UK, the SNP lost a string of high-profile seats, with Alex Salmond and Angus Robertson among the casualties.

Mr O’Hara had 35.9% of the total vote, compared to 44,3% two years ago.

The Conservatives repeated the huge gains made in last month’s council elections, with Helensburgh Councillor Gary Mulvaney overtaking the Liberal Democrat former MP Alan Reid to come within 1,328 votes of Mr O’Hara.

Michael Kelly increased Labour’s total vote compared to 2015, but still finished in fourth place.

The turnout was 71.6%
