Former council leader is not nominated by SNP for Argyll and Bute elections

A new candidate will contest the Helensburgh Central ward for the SNP in May’s council elections, with Lorna Douglas standing for the seat held since 2007 by the SNP’s James Robb.

James Robb was not one of the SNP’s nominated candidates announced this week

Cllr Robb, who was leader of Argyll and Bute Council, for three months in 2013, would not discuss the announcement by the Helensburgh SNP branch executive committee this week, saying: “I don’t normally comment on internal SNP matters.”

The SNP confirmed that Richard Trail would again stand for the Helensburgh and Lomond South seat which he has represented since 2012, while the branch was still in the process of selecting a candidate for the Lomond North seat.

Nominations for the May 4 election must be placed by 4pm on March 29; all wards are multi-member and the Helensburgh Central ward has four seats up for grabs, while there are three councillors apiece for Lomond North and Helensburgh and Lomond South.

The Liberal Democrats have confirmed that Lomond North will be contested by Paul Kennedy, Helensburgh Central by Graham Hardie and Aileen Morton and Helensburgh and Lomond South by Jacqueline Davis and Ellen Morton.

Confirmation of candidates for the Conservative and Labour parties is still awaited, while the area’s two current Independent councillors, George Freeman and Robert MacIntyre, have indicated that they will stand again.

Further information on the nomination process, and how to ensure you’re eligible to vote, is available on the council website.
