Argyll and Bute’s best new building designs are honoured in awards

Developments ranging from a remote cottage on Tiree to a housing estate in Helensburgh have been recognised in Argyll and Bute Council’s sustainable design awards.

Thirteen designs were shortlisted, and councillors will be asked on Thursday to confirm winners in four categories:

  • New build residential (single or small-scale): House No.7, Tiree
  • New build large-scale residential development: Park Square Redevelopment, Campbeltown
  • New build non-residential: Portavadie Leisure and Spa
  • Redevelopment or refurbishment of an existing building: Greystones Hotel, Oban
  • A commendation is also recommended for Tayvallich Early Years Unit.

A report to the council’s planning, protective services and licensing committee says that judges visited 13 shortlisted properties last year, meeting to recommend winners in February.

“The judges have been impressed at the high quality of entries that have showcased outstanding design, environmental considerations and historic preservation across the whole of Argyll and which have highlighted the positive impact such design is having on our area,” said executive director of development and infrastructure service Pippa Milne.

“This shows that Argyll and Bute is home to some outstanding design, be it large-scale housing schemes, flagship commercial developments, bespoke individual houses or community developments, and the awards aim to promote and continue the overall quality of design in the area.”

A speaker from Architecture and Design Scotland will be invited to an awards ceremony in May.
