Pay rise for Argyll and Bute councillors to be rubber-stamped this week

Councillors look set to be given a 1% pay rise – just weeks after approving cuts which means 80 jobs being lost.

The Scottish Government has introduced new legislation meaning the pay for councillors, the council leader and the provost will all increase by 1%.

A report at the full meeting of Argyll and Bute Council this week states that the salaries are governed by Scottish Government regulations.

A vote in the Scottish Parliament confirmed that councillors across Scotland have been awarded a 1% pay rise for 2016-17, which will be backdated to April 1.

The report by executive director of customer services Douglas Hendry adds that the council has discretion on payment for senior councillor roles, but has historically adopted the same increase as for other roles.

The parliament decision means that all councilors will be paid at least £16,893 per year, while provost Len Scoullar will receive £25,341 and council leader Dick Walsh £33,789.

Councillors with a ‘policy lead’ role currently receive £23,697; if a 1% increase is agreed that will rise to £23,934.

Area committee chairs currently receive £19,757; if a 1% increase is agreed that would rise to £19,955.
