New Commodore and head of diving group at Faslane

A SERCO tug boat sprayed a plume of water from the Gareloch to mark the Commodore’s waterborne departure from Faslane.

Faslane has a new hand at the helm with the appointment of Commodore Mark Gayfer as Naval Base Commander Clyde.

And the base’s bomb disposal experts also have a new man in charge.

Commodore Gayfer takes over from Commodore Mark Adams who has held the top job at HM Naval Base Clyde since October 2014.NE160018010

Commodore Gayfer said: “As the Naval Base continues its journey towards becoming the home of the entire UK Submarine Service, I fully expect the coming months and years to be both exciting and challenging.

“We have a tremendously able and dedicated team here at Clyde and so I am confident that we will meet those challenges, overcome them, and create a Naval Base that provides world-class support to our vessels, sailors and their families.”

Commodore Adams will be moving on to a role leading the Nuclear Propulsion Team at Abbeywood in Bristol.

On February 8, with the official hand-over, he left the base in true naval style.

Boarding a Royal Marine Island Class vessel at the jetty-side he was waved off by sailors from HMS Neptune, Royal Marines from 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group and members of the civilian workforce.

Tony, who has previously served as Mine Counter Measures Staff Officer to the Faslane Flotilla, takes over from Lieutenant Commander Stephen Brown as CO of Northern Diving Group (NDG).

Steve commanded the unit from January 2014 and during that time also briefly commanded mine hunters HMS Bangor and Blyth.

During the two years Steve was in charge, NDG attended 205 explosive ordnance disposal tasks, 46 significant operations, conducted 2,661 dives and took part in three NATO Submarine Rescue System exercises.

Lieutenant Commander Hampshire, trained as a Clearance Diving Officer in 2002 where received the Superintendent of Diving Trophy for best student.

“I would like to wish Steve all the best in his retirement and thank him for all his hard work and dedication during his time as CO of Northern Diving Group,” said Tony.

“I am very much looking forward to the job ahead and the challenges it will bring.”
