Braeholm to close this summer, naval support charity announces

image.phpThe charity Aggie Westons has announced that its Braeholm centre in Helensburgh will close in June.

A statement this morning said that trustees had taken the decision ‘after much careful deliberation and with great regret.

But the charity insists that despite closing the family and accommodation centre it is still committed to supporting naval families in the town.

A statement said of Braeholm: “In considering its outputs in more detail, and informed by a recent study, it was concluded that the building itself is not providing sufficient benefit to those that we serve for it to justify the level of investment required to maintain it, both now and in the future.

“A decision was therefore made that the centre should close.

“Aggie’s is now consulting with a number of key stakeholders to determine how we can continue, and increase where appropriate, our support to the Naval community in the Faslane area.

“Far from pulling out of Helensburgh, Aggie’s is committed to developing its work in the area.”

Formerly a nursing and maternity hospital, the building on East Montrose Street is set to close ‘no earlier than June 30’.

It provides accommodation (16 en-suite bedrooms) for visiting naval personnel and to help families visiting the area to be close to loved ones.

Naval personnel and families can also use a fitness room, coffee shop and other amenities, and Braeholm also hosts regular special events such as barbecues, courses, Sunday dinners and fun days to boost the morale of families during submariners’ long patrols.
