Early morning ice hazards for drivers

Icy roads caused problems for drivers on untreated roads this morning after a heavy overnight frost.

There were early morning accidents in Garelochhead village and on the B833 lochside road, with overnight rain having frozen, while the 316 bus service also ran slightly behind schedule.

An Argyll and Bute Council spokesperson said the route was gritted at 6am today and 3.30pm yesterday in line with the authority’s winter maintenance policy, which meant it would only be gritted overnight ‘in extreme conditions.

He added: “The B833 is a Priority Two route, meaning that, from Monday to Saturday, it is pre-treated as required from 0600-0800, pre-treated in advance of forecast freezing conditions between 0800-1600 and treated reactively as reported conditions dictate from 1600 – 2200 and treated reactively overnight only in extreme conditions.”

Near-freezing temperatures are forecast for tonight (Friday), followed by light rain and slightly warmer conditions from Saturday afternoon.

  1. Argyll & Bute spokesperson speaks with forked tongue! I know for a fact the B833 in Cove had not been gritted when I was on the road at 06:15. The gritter truck WAS on the road at 08:00, I know because I followed it from Cove to Rosneath.
