Hermitage Academy’s management has effectively performed a u-turn over exams following a groundswell of opposition.

Parents, pupils, MSPs and union leaders all attacked the school’s senior phase system, while a government inspector condemned the ‘inflexible approach’.

The highly unusual system means that no pupils took national exams in their fourth year, but yesterday (Monday) the Helensburgh school published a wide-ranging action plan which will reverse that policy.

Results in Higher exams at the academy this summer were the worst of anywhere in Argyll and Bute – and the authority’s average lags behind the national average.

Today Kevin Middleton, who became chair of the Parent Council after a number of resignations in recent months, said: “It looks like the majority of demands from parents will be met though the finer details have yet to be announced.

“The Parent Council will be working in the new year with school and authority to ensure detail is written in plain English to allow parents to fully understand what is available for their child and that there is no space for interpretation by the school.

“This is another example of what can be achieved when parents and pupils come together act together and speak as one. “

Letters are being sent to the parents of all children – these are available to download on the school website – while the action plans is available here: 1450713394HermitageAcademyCurriculumReviewActionPlan1712151
