Royal honour for Helensburgh officer

PA-24718757A Royal Navy officer from Helensburgh is due to retire in December after 37 years has been awarded an MBE.

Commander Kerry Marmont’s career has been wide-ranging but he cites his favourite deployment as the Commanding Officer of the UK Tomahawk Mission Planning and Strike Execution facility at the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) in Northwood.

Kerry headed up a small but highly specialised combined British and American civilian and Royal Navy/RAF team with direct involvement in UK tactical cruise missile operations following 9/11.

His last appointment was at MoD Abbey Wood in Bristol where he was the UK’s Tomahawk equipment programme manager and senior naval officer for DE&S’s Weapons Operating Centre.

As well as his naval career, Kerry’s citation spoke of his dedicated and selfless support to trusts and charities, describing his performance as ‘exemplary’ and ‘in the finest traditions of the service’.

Kerry received his MBE in an investiture at Buckingham Palace which he attended with wife, son and mother.

He said: “I was hugely thrilled to receive this honour.

“This is for all my friends, family, colleagues and associates from the service, Oxfam and groups such as the community council, Scouts, Princes Trust, going back to the Faslane Fair days in the 1990s.

“It’s with thanks for all their help, love, patience and understanding and they all share a part of this.”

Originally from Swansea, Kerry has lived in Helensburgh for 30 years.

His current hobbies include running Kerry’s Corner at Oxfam in Helensburgh which sells music, media, gadgets and collectibles – and he is always looking for donations of vinyl LP records from any era.

Kerry and his wife also own a number of Border Collies and are working hard at training them with the eventual goal of being able to improve their handling and being able to enter sheepdog trials.
