Diggers finally move in to clear ‘eyesore’ and extend Rosneath Co-op

Work has finally begun to demolish a derelict building in Rosneath and upgrade the village’s Co-op store.

Diggers have moved in to knock down the former community centre which sits next to the current shop, after years of complaints that it was ‘an eyesore’ and dangerously obstructed drivers’ views at a busy junction.

Plans to demolish it and extend the Co-op store were approved more than a year ago, and earlier this year council officials serviced the company with an official notice warning that the roof posed a danger to the public.

Today (Thursday) a spokesperson for the Co-operative Food said: “Work on the new Co-op store in Rosneath will begin next week.

“It is expected that the store will open in the middle of next year.”

The Co-op was first given planning permission to demolish the building and extend its nearby store back in 2008, but there was no progress until now, despite repeated complaints from the public and councillors.

The new store will be 350 square metres, with parking for eight cars at the rear.

The site is in the Rosneath Conservation Area, but in 2008 Historic Scotland agreed not to object to the demolition.
