News in brief: Alcohol consultation, Beavers and Scouts are back, train drivers wanted

Is alcohol for sale in too many places in Helensburgh?

The Argyll and Bute Licensing Board has launched a consultation exercise after identifying the burgh as one of five towns having ‘pockets of high availability’.

The board says statistics from police, fire and ambulance services seem to show ‘over provision’ contributes to crime, fire and health issues.

The consultation is being undertaken Iconic Consulting of Edinburgh, who will report their findings by the end of October 2015.

Beavers and Scouts are restarting in Kilcreggan this autumn , with new leaders in place for both groups.

Beavers will meet for the first time from 6-7pm on October 20 in the  1st Peninsula scout hut on Fort Road, then every Tuesday, while the Scouts are already meeting on Thursdays from 7-9.

Scotrail says it has launched an ‘unprecedented’ recruitment campaign that will create up to 10 new train driver jobs in areas including Helensburgh.

Operator Abellio – which earlier this year had to cancel services because of crew shortages – wants to hear from ‘enthusiastic, reliable candidates with excellent attention spans, experience of safety-critical roles and a passion for customer service’.

Trainee drivers will be paid £24,559 during their first year of intensive training, gradually increasing to £43,212 following a probationary period.
