Civic Centre is the public choice in name game of council’s new headquarters

Helensburgh and Lomond Civic Centre has been ‘by far’ the most popular name suggested for Argyll and Bute Council’s new base in Helensburgh.

But that doesn’t mean it will necessarily be the final choice for the East Clyde Street building, with the council saying in a rather opaque statement today: “The public will be kept informed about the process for deciding on which name or names will be given to the building.”

Nearly 50 people responded to the council’s request last month for names to be suggested, with some offering a single idea and others putting forward two or three in line with the invitation to name all three aspects of the building individually.

Other favoured names incorporated famous individuals associated with the area, including John Logie Baird, Henry Bell, Templeton and Colquhoun.

Names from Helensburgh’s history were also suggested, including Millig, Clutha and Lennox.

Gary Mulvaney, chair of the Helensburgh and Lomond area committee, said: “The community’s interest in the council’s new building is heartening, especially as it has been designed for the community, and the community contributed to that design.

“There have been many varied suggestions for a name and some people have put a lot of thought into their suggestions. I would like to thank everyone for their interest and for taking the time to contribute.”

The building is said by the council to be ‘almost complete’, the statement added: “The council is working with its contractors and all parties involved in resolving outstanding issues.”
