Busy weekend for Helensburgh lifeboat crew

Helensburgh’s lifeboat was in action four times in three days last week.

On Sunday (August 28) the RNLI crew was out on a planned exercise in Rhu Narrows at 12.28 when they saw a six-metre RIB which was adrift with a rope round its prop.

The crew was in the process of recovering two kayaks (as part of an exercise), so tied the RIB to a buoy, brought the kayaks back to Rhu Marina and then returned to the RIB.

After untangling the line from the RIB’s prop and escorting it back to Rosneath Castle Caravan Park, the crew returned to station reporting ready for service again at 12:58 – only to be called out less than five hours later.

Belfast Coastguard requested the lifeboat to go to the assistance of a 27-feet yacht that was adrift mid-channel between Hunter’s Quay and Cloch Point.

Apparently one of the yacht’s lines had become entangled in the prop, and with the gusty weather conditions, assistance had been sought.

After locating the vessel, the lifeboat crew towed it back to Rhu Marina.

On Friday and Saturday the lifeboat was involved the in the search for a pensioner who had gone missing from the Port Glasgow area; his body was later found near Rosneath Castle Caravan Park – the death is not being treated as suspicious.
