New research has shown that most residents and businesses in Luss are against a parking regime proposed for the village – and want a barrier to keep visitor traffic out of the Loch Lomondside beauty spot.

The study was commissioned by landowners Luss Estates and the Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park in response to controversial plans by Argyll and Bute Council which would see residents forced to buy parking permits.

Locals say that with about 750,000 visitors a year, many arriving by car, the narrow streets of Luss are often clogged with traffic, putting pedestrians at risk.

The importance of access and safety was also highlighted by representatives of Loch Lomond Rescue, who said: “Some solution to congestion must be found – on occasion crew on call-out and emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, fire service) cannot get near the boatshed.”

Simon Miller, chief executive of Luss Estates, said the results of the survey were ‘compelling’ and said that with 83 responses it was more valid than the council’s consultation , which only received 34 replies – mostly against the plan – after only four days’ notice was given.

“Argyll and Bute Council’s proposed solution to traffic problems in Luss has been overwhelmingly rejected by both village residents and the wider parish,” he said.

“A clear majority of residents want to see visitor traffic excluded from the village by means of a barrier.

“The council wants to impose a solution which is contrary to the wishes of the village and parish, and in my view is short-sighted.

“This is a pivotal moment for the future of Luss and I am extremely worried that the council’s intention to impose a poor solution to Luss’ traffic issues will have a detrimental and far-reaching impact on this historic village for years to come.”

He dismissed arguments that cars could be banned from the village, saying he had visited Hawkshead and Near Sawrey in the Lake District where a similar system had worked effectively.

And he has asked Luss and Arden Community Council to withdraw its support for the council plans, seeking a stricter regime which would exclude visitors’ cars either by a barrier or ‘restrictive street design’.

A spokesperson for Argyll and Bute Council said the proposals had now been agreed by members and would go to formal consultation, where anyone could make representations.

  1. Totally agree – as a regular visitor the car parking is a shambles. The main car park could also do with refreshed signage and wjite line. This year , it has become a free for all.
