Kilcreggan school staffing cut – despite increase in pupil numbers

Concerned parents have been told that there will only be four classes at Kilcreggan Primary School in September, with two teachers not being replaced when they leave this summer.

It is thought that staffing cuts are also being planned for the primary schools in the neighbouring villages of Rosneath and Garelochhead.

Parents in Cove and Kilcreggan were told the news this week – despite the school roll increasing to 93 pupils in September, P5, 6 and 7 will form a composite class.

One worried father said: “We’re concerned that with a rising school roll the council chooses to reduce its staffing – going against targets set by central government and COSLA

“It’s proven that larger class sizes are not as good educationally and the government has stated this for many years.

“Having the upper three years in a class must be hard to teach.”

The school was one of 26 threatened with closure by Argyll and Bute Council in 2010, but pupil numbers have increased since then.

A council spokesperson said: “We are committed to maintaining teacher numbers in Argyll and Bute’s schools in line with national policy.

“Teacher allocations are based on pupil rolls, using an agreed staffing formula.

“It is helpful to note that pupil numbers can fluctuate from year to year and this may have an impact on the staffing allocation for individual schools.”
