Hermitage Park given a spring clean

More than 40 volunteers turned out to give Helensburgh’s Hermitage Park a spring clean.

Organised by the Friends of Hermitage Park as part of a Keep Scotland Beautiful annual event, it was supported by Plastic Free Helensburgh and the town’s community council, who provided litter picking equipment.

And the newly-formed Argyll and Bute Climate Action Network helped by providing a skip and refreshments.

“It was great to see the park community coming together,” said a spokesperson for the organisers.

“We were particularly pleased to be supported by Argyll and Bute councillors Fiona Howard and Mark Irvine, and Elizabeth Howie, the community champion from the Co-op, and we thank them along with all our other dedicated litter pickers young and old.

“As well as collecting rubbish from hidden parts of the park a highlight of the day was a guided tour of the park by Jon Simmons, one of the trustees who was very involved in the recent regeneration project.

“Huge thanks are due our regular park volunteers who give up their time to help with weekly with tasks in the park and to Stewart the park supervisor who coordinates this.”

The Friends say they are always looking for new ideas for events and activities in the park as well as willing volunteers.

There are volunteer sessions at the park on Tuesdays from 10am until 12 noon and Thursdays between 1:30pm and 3pm, while donations of seeds and plants for the community garden can be handed in at the greenhouse by the Victoria Road entrance to the park.

“The park is now ready and clean for the summer season ahead and we ask that everyone who uses it does their bit to keep it clean, tidy and beautiful,” said the spokesperson.

“There are plenty of bins and we have a new litter picking station provided by Plastic Free Helensburgh with money from the Argyll and Bute Supporting Communities Fund.

“Look out for it around the park and help by collecting any rubbish you might spot and disposing of it in a bin.”
