A83 reopens at Rest and Be Thankful

The main A83 reopened today, after being closed for almost a week because of landslide fears.

Heavy rain meant that traffic on the trunk road had been forced to use the single-track Old Military Road since last Wednesday.

But after a hillside inspection and safety review by engineers the main road reopened today, with traffic lights in place.

Staff from contractors BEAR Scotland are still monitoring the hillside and inspecting the area where movement was recently observed.

Ian Stewart, the company’s north west representative, said: “Safety is paramount and in response to the recent weather, we took proactive steps to ensure continued safe passage for all road users, keeping the A83 open.

“The trunk road is now returning to operation under traffic management and we thank everyone for their understanding.

“Argyll remains very much open for business.”
