‘Massive’ damage caused in mountain bike trail vandalism

Mountain bike trails near Helensburgh which were built by young people were wrecked by vandals last week.

Bridges and jumps on two of the trails were destroyed, putting riders at risk if they had come across the damage unawares.

Jackie Hood of the Helensburgh Skatepark Project said the trails had been built with the landowner’s permission and Scottish Woodlands had no problem with them being used.

Building and using the trails had helped young people deal with the last 12 months, she said, especially since the town currently has no skatepark because of Argyll and Bute Council’s waterfront development.

The effort involved in that amount of destruction must have been ‘massive’, she said

“I just don’t understand people sometimes,” she added.

“In these times of childhood obesity and the looming mental health crisis, anything that gets our young people outside exercising in nature must be a good thing.

“Why would anyone want to damage that?”

The damage is thought to have taken place either on Tuesday night or during the day time on Wednesday – Helensburgh Trail Systems, run by a group of local teenagers, has started to repair the bridges.
